Has anyone here installed rally-style lights onto the front of their car for highway driving? I’m looking to add some light to the front of my ‘Scort, and have always loved the look of rally lights. Problem is, very few of them seem to indicate their intended use; I can’t use floods on the highway. Ideally, I’d like dimmable lights that I can tie into my regular headlamp system. I definitely don’t like the look of tiny lights; I want something 5" wide or larger. I’m considering using some generic motorcycle headlamps, but would really prefer something designed for the application I have in mind. Any ideas? My budget is about $50-70.
This is my goal (via lame photoshop):

Not for legal. No one makes for legal driving lights to replace stock lights that I know of. You can call them aux lights at inspection time but pattern, intensity and power makes them bad choices for primary lights

I installed some hella 500 or something.
I used a piece of angle iron and did a crappy mounting job. I never did wire them up as I got pulled over for not having license plate in the middle of the car. Stupid reason, no ticket but he mentioned if I could set up the lights I could get the plate in the middle. I removed the lights and never got pulled over in the 6 years since.

The previous owner of my Blazer did (both on the pushbar and the roof rack), and was pulled over for driving with them on. The police had him cut the wires and everything so he couldn’t just turn them back on. And this was in Michigan where we have no vehicle inspections and almost anything goes for street cars. So.... yea.

Thankfully, I live in an inspection-free zone. The one redeeming car quality of living in a hick state!

Wow, I’ve never gotten yelled at for that. Heck, plenty of SUVs have off-center rear plates. That’s crazy.

Interesting. I wasn’t aware that cops might care about that. Then again, every cop has his own agendas. In the town I just moved from, there’s a cop that confiscates and tickets for having radar detectors, even though they’re completely legal. I guess making up the law as you go is one of the perks of being a cop.

Even still, it’s like driving around with your high beams on...bad idea

I love the way you form fitted the license plate to the bumper and just screwed it in. Fits the car perfectly :-)

Actually there is a hole in the bumper underneath the plate from a precious owner accident. One day I had self tapping screws and the drill was out. Hammerd the edges to fold over to contour of bumper.
This is a car definition of a love hate relationship.

And that’s why I want to be sure I’m getting lights that are either dual-beam, or that I’ll just wire with my high-beams. I definitely don’t want anything that’ll blind oncoming traffic.

99.9% of aux vehicle lights (aftermarket lights meant to be installed on light bars and such) are illegal to use on the road nationwide. Odds are he was enforcing the law, not making it up when he pulled Yamahog’s friend over. Forcing the guy to cut the wires was shitty and possibly illegal though

But at least it made it easier for me to donate them for Santiago’s Rallye36

A lot of states allow for factory “fog” lights, so there is some gray area in your favor. If you mount inconspicuous LED lights below the headlights in or near the side air intakes, you could possibly get away with it. The more conspicuous it is, the greater chance of it causing a problem. Have them on their own circuit so they can be enabled/disabled at will.
